학과소개

The milestones of history are marked by our use of materials from Stone Age to Bronze Age to Iron Age. Korea is very proud of its first casting of this type of metal in the world in the 12th century. Today the world is in the midst of materials revolution, the outcome of which will affect the economic well being of all nations and all industries. Examples of achievements in the field surround us. Smaller and faster devices in the electronic industry are almost entirely the result of material improvements.


Modern metal alloys and strong ceramics and advanced polymers are critical to high-performance engines, energy conversion, and pollution control. Unifying our separate majors in material fields was introduced in 1996 as School of Advanced Materials Engineering. School of Advanced Materials Engineering has 4 major fields of Metallurgical Engineering, Metal Materials Processing Engineering, Materials Engineering, and Polymer Science and Technology. There are currently 25 faculty members and approximately 750 undergraduate students, and approximately 100 graduate students. The first year of our program is common to all majors and then students get into their major course work.


The main aims of our Division are to foster and develop academic excellence across a wide range of subjects at fundamental and then higher levels of study. Our aims are to provide students with the highest quality education at both undergraduate and graduate level and to produce graduates of the caliber sought by industry, the professions and the public service.

Metallurgical Sytem Engineering Major

Strong, light aluminum alloys for aircraft, and nickel alloys are able to resist high temperatures in the engines, and steels to build oil rigs battered by waves in the sea or to construct the pipelines that transport gas across freezing earth to resist such a severe condition. Many parts of industry consist of metals and alloys. So many aspects of our present-day life which rely critically on the metals that we use, on the specific properties that they possess, and on the quality. The list of metals and their uses seems endless, and every day a new challenge appears. Metallurgical research and teaching began in Chonbuk National University in the 1950s within the department of metallurgical engineering and much expansion and development took place in the following years.


There are two majors related to metallurgy in this division. One is Metallurgical Engineering Major, and the other is Metallic Materials Processing Major. This Metallurgical Engineering Major concerns the fields of chemical metallurgy and metallic materials. The blast-furnace process is currently the most important route for hot metal production. Pohang Steel Company is the biggest steel maker in the world. Recently hydrometallurgy has become strategically important increasingly in view of environmental aspects since carbon dioxide is a factor for the green house effect.
